Getting to know your International Contact

I have not heard back from any of the professional contacts that I tried to contact from other parts of the world. Since, I did not hear back from any of the professionals I decided to do the alternative assignment. I am not giving up completely on the professional contacts. I am going to keep trying and maybe I will hear back from someone before this class is over.

I looked at childhood poverty in India. Between 1999-2000 the poverty rate was over 250 million. India has the highest poverty rate in South Asia. The rural poverty is cause by the lack of education, health, and skills. Over the past five decades they are trying to reduce the rate of poverty. One way is by their anti poverty programme. The three main programmes are rural employment creation and infrastructure, self-employment, and good subsidy.

This week I have learned a lot about poverty. Poverty does not have a name, color, or type. Poverty can happen to anyone at any given time especially the way the economy is going now. We as educators must let our voices be heard. If we have students that are going through poverty we need to help them find resources that can assist them during their hard times.

  1. Hello Chastity,
By reading into some case studies and current data on poverty this week, I never thought how close poverty is to my home as well as in distant places. It is sad that poverty does affect the learning of children. Poverty is linked to bad health and children cannot function to their fullest potential when they are ill. I agree with you, even though we as teachers play many roles as professionals, one of these vital roles of an early childhood educator is to be mindful of their families that are undergoing poverty and help them find resources that can assist them through linking them to referrals within their community.

  2. Chastity,
I too haven’t heard back from any of the individuals that I’ve tried to contact. I haven’t stopped trying because I think it would be a neat experience. Poverty can happen to anyone because the unexpected happens to everyone. Not having enough money saved up for these unexpected events (natural disaster, death of a family member, loss of job, etc). From my research, poverty is everyone. It’s not just in the U.S., China, or India. It’s everywhere. Good luck on hearing back from those who you have tried to contact. I’m glad I’m not that only one in that predicament.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Arica
